JC Higgins Model 583.17 is a 12-gauge tube-fed bolt-action shotgun produced by High Standard for Sears, Roebuck & Co. during the 1950s. Full choke. 2-3/4" chamber. 28" barrel. No serial number. The 12-gauge variants (including model number prefix 583.17) suffer from design stress issues where the receiver or locking areas can shear under 12-gauge pressures, causing the bolt to blow backward. Because of the catastrophic failure risk, it is strongly advised not to shoot a Model 583.17 12-gauge.
